WHERE SHOULD MY IMAGES BE USED?

Well, we looked at other photographer’s work, and we have researched a few clients. And all of that is great.

But have we looked carefully at our own work to help us understand where WE think our images can be used?

Remember – there is no wrong answer.

Take a look at the first image in your portfolio. Where do you see that image being used? Is it an advertising “HERO” image, an editorial filler shot, or a catalog image for a retailer? Does it evoke an emotion, or show the detail of a product? Is it a “once in a lifetime” moment, or a wink of reality caught by your shutter?

The reason there is no wrong answer is because you will always be surprised by the places your images can get used. An art director or some sort of creative can make all sorts of images work in all sorts of situations. And that is cool. Really cool.

But it doesn’t alleviate us from doing the hard creative work to help others, and ourselves, see the work as useful for _____.

We are training our brains here!

And that training is what will help us become more visually literate, see more opportunities in front of us, and create images that will propel us further than simply taking snaps or random images.

Use this Image Uses Form to help guide you to seeing possibilities within your own work.

The Ad Assessment Tool

Let’s take a very close look at the work being done in the areas we love.

Use the FPCN AD Audit Form and do a dozen or so just to get familiar with the research that goes into this work.

In order to research what is going on, we will use Google to help us locate information that would make these assessments easier to work through – AND we will learn a lot more about who, and where, the work we want to do is being done.

We may not be quite ready for it yet, but we are gonna know all about it when the time comes.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO BE INVOLVED.

ASSIGNMENT:

What ads would you like to be shooting? Do the research.

Google “ad agency for _________”, “photographer __________ ad”, “who is the art director for _________”

Write down what you find. Then review it to see if it brings some ideas of what you may want to shoot – and how.
