Note the very subtle “S” curve in the mussels and the shells. We can see the medium softbox in the drops of water, and the slate makes a perfect background for the different textures of the food.
Color and shape are used as compositional tools in this photograph. The beautiful use of a monochromatic white for the surface and background makes the melon’s texture and color stand out. And the artful use of negative space puts the melon in the perfect spot to dominate the surroundings.
What looks like a jumble of fruit is really a careful composition. Note how the sliced peach is the only one in total focus, while the peaches above it gently lead the eye toward it. If that wasn’t enough, the knife handle brings us right around to it. Soft, natural looking light.
Follow the arch around from the cleaver in front, along the meat and edge of cutting board to the cleaver at the top. It is actually pointing to the center of the spiral. Clever and compelling and notice how the photographer used the lighting to keep our eyes on cue around the spiral to the middle. Good looking chop too.
Look at all the subtleties in this shot. The balance of the top area by the deep red soup and the contrasty white foam on it. Everything else is low in contrast, but the bowl brings us to itself by placement, color, and dominance in the composition.

Two shots with composition as the driving tool. Yes, composition and lighting are always important, and lighting is in this shot as well. However, I want to see something truly cool with the composition factor being very high. Push your vision.
