How we use our point of view or camera angle is very important to the representation of the food when it is presented.
Shooting straight down is shows a more graphical approach while shooting at a ‘comfortable’ angle like 45 degrees to the surface lends itself to a more natural relationship. An angle of about 45 degrees feels natural because that is how we usually see food.
Shooting obliquely, or up at the food will make a totally different statement. It seems to remove food from its context and put it into a whole different feel emotionally – or should I say lack of emotionality.
Here are ten shots of corn. Notice how the point of view changes from above to ‘comfortable, to oblique and how that changes the corn within the context of food. Macro shots of corn can bring an entirely different feel to the image as well.
