I have been asked by Christopher Tierney to come out to Omaha for a workshop. I have not done workshops for a while, but I really like the midwest and look forward to spending some time there.

So here is the deal. I will indeed be doing two workshops in Omaha on May 31 and June 1, 2014. I am keeping the price crazy low. And the value crazy high. I know how to teach lighting, and I want to spend some time in the heartland.

Two workshops:
One for beginners and one for the more advanced shooters. If you would like to take both, that is fine, but do check out the pre-requisites for the class.

I will be keeping the attendance to 10-12 people max per class. The studio is very large and can accommodate all of us easily, and I want to get to know each of the students there and make sure that all of the stuff that we need to address is understood.

If you are looking for a workshop to learn the basics of lighting, and how to take the next steps for more finesse, consider learning with me. I have taught twice on CreativeLIVE, written three books for Amherst Media, and was voted one of the top 13 workshop teachers in the world by Photo District News in 2011.

Specifics for the Beginning Workshop:

I love light. I love teaching about light.

The goal of this workshop is to introduce the beginning/intermediate photographer to the principles and techniques of lighting. Whether for portraits, seniors, families, beauty and fashion, certain fundamentals apply. Those fundamentals are what we teach.

When you aren’t worried about the technical aspects of making a photograph, you can spend the time you need on the creative. And the creative is what pays off.

We will go through the mechanics of exposure with both natural and artificial light. Learning to use the meter in your camera to advantage will save time ‘chimping’ and knowing how to use your flash will save those bad lighting situations.

We will also cover working with talent – both professional and amateur – and discover many ways you can work with the subjects in front of your camera, and use the light to create the photographs you see in your head.

This is not a workshop where I set up lighting situations for you to then shoot. We don’t do a lot of lecturing and note taking. We DO the lighting. YOU do the lighting.

I believe in teaching to all of the senses. We listen and learn. See and learn. Do and learn. You will be doing a lot of the work, and I will be guiding you and making sure you are using your newfound skills to best advantage.

There is  also a lot of fun. Photography IS fun. I am there to help you make better photographs in a fun and creative environment. We spend all day together. I am not a workshop instructor that comes in at 9AM and leaves at 5PM.

The only reason I am there is to work with all of you. And we do… right into the evening if need be. I answer questions as they come, and I make sure you understand the answers.

Your success is my success.

We start with a photowalk at 8AM, then into the workshop at 9AM. Lunch is included, and we will be making photographs all day. We shoot until sunset and then go to dinner, and if you wish to continue with chatting about photography, we are good with that as well. I am only there for you.

You will need:

  • Camera
  • Telephoto or Zoom Telephoto.
  • Wide Angle or Zoom wide angle.
  • A 5-in-one reflector (43” or larger)
  • A speedlight.
  • A stand for the speedlight including the mounting mechanism for your flash.
  • A wireless trigger system that works with your camera.
  • Tripod

You should also have a working knowledge of your camera.

How to:

  • Change aperture
  • Change shutter speed
  • Change ISO
  • Attach a wireless trigger to the camera
  • If you have a light meter, bring it.
  • If you have a light meter and do not know how to use it, bring it for sure!

All attendees will receive a free coupon for my UDEMY course “Portraiture Using Simple Gear” or “Natural Light Fashion and Beauty” whichever you choose. (Approximately $60 value)

I am sorry to disappoint, but I have absolutely no DVD’s, actions, textures, T-Shirts, hoodies, camera bags, monogrammed thongs or other merchandise to try to force-sell you at the workshop. In fact, I have nothing to sell there at all. (Refreshing, I know.)

I look forward to working with you in Omaha, and promise to make this one of the most exciting and powerful learning experiences you have ever attended.

Fee is $275 for this full day workshop.
(If you wish to take both, it would be $500 total.)

Specifics for the Advanced Workshop:

This workshop is for those of you who want to dig deeper than the basic exposure/lighting techniques and discover new and more advanced ways to use light, subjects and emotion in their images.

We take a holistic approach to the creation of photography. Creative processes are discussed and then we put them to work. This is a hands-on, total engagement day of photography.

Blending strobe with daylight, multiple lights, advanced natural light, and studio techniques that will help you realize a more professional image are all on the agenda for the day, and it is heavily interspersed with ideas on creating images that are unique, finding your style and working toward a professional presentation of your work.

Sculpting, modifying and manipulating light to create the best possible photograph is never a quick and easy proposition, it is something that takes vision and a full knowledge of how light works.

And how subjects present that light is the most important part of understanding excellence in the image. And we discuss that in length as we shoot.

Understanding the three aspects of light, Specular, True Value, and Shadow and how they transition between them is truly the basis of all advanced lighting.

This is a structured day with lots of time for shooting, asking questions and clarifying the student’s knowledge of lighting and creating unique imagery.

We start at 8AM with a meet and greet, and jump into the workshop at 9AM. We go until a little past sunset, then adjourn for a group dinner and more discussion. Lunch is included and we dine while we are working. There is a lot to cover, and I want to make sure we cover it.

You will need:

  • Camera
  • Wide angle, normal, telephoto lens.
  • Working knowledge of flash and two flashes.
  • Triggers to fire both flashes.
  • Umbrellas / softboxes for both flashes
  • Working knowledge of exposure.
  • Tripod

Optional:

  • Tethered shooting gear
  • Light Meter
  • Additional modifiers.

Plan for a long day. We will have water and snacks available, and we are working most of the day, so not a lot of sitting around taking notes, although taking notes while we are working is highly suggested.

OK to video tape at the workshop as long as we agree the videos will not end up online. Personal videos for remembering what was taught here is fine with me.

All attendees will receive a free course of their choice from my UDEMY courses:
Portrait Photography with Simple Gear
Natural Light Fashion and Beauty
No BS Approach to Marketing for Photographers

Fee is $275 for this full day workshop.
(If you wish to take both, it would be $500 total.)

I will be available for a limited amount of portfolio reviews. You will have to arrange them in advance with me and will be 45 minutes long. Due to time constraints, I can only do 5 of them and the day is still to be announced. Fee is $75.

Thanks everyone, and I look forward to making this happen in Omaha.
