There is no more powerful way to get your work seen than Instagram. It is the clear winner in image and photo sharing and many photographers have captured huge numbers of followers to their profiles.
These huge numbers – and in some niches not even that many followers – have translated to a multitude of work opportunities.
- Instagram allows you to connect to people who are looking for images. This is a far different way than the marketing of photographs has been done in the past. Connecting is easy on Instagram and it can be a great way to get to meet people in your industry.
- With “tags” it is possible for you to reach clients in a way that is not considered obtrusive or take any time from their day. For instance, if you have an image that you know would be great for a magazine editor or you want to shoot for that magazine, find their name and tag them. This should be done with a lot of finesse and do not wear out your welcome. Once or twice a month is great. Every day and you become a nuisance.
- Shooting for clients Instagram account is another way Instagram is offering opportunities for working photographers. Contracted, monthly work is the most common way, but others include product placement and endorsements. Even an account with a few hundred followers can be influential with the right product / demographic connection.
- Having a large Instagram following can also help you land assignments. The client (rightly) believes that if you do the shoot, your Instagram followers will check it out and they will increase sales because of YOU and what/who you bring to the table.
